Mozambique urges firms’ return to attack-hit region

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has encouraged private companies to resume operations in Palma in Cabo Delgado province, where activities have been paralysed since March last year following jihadist attacks

President Nyusi said there were signs that security had been restored as a result of actions by joint forces of Mozambique, Rwanda and the regional bloc Sadc.

“The security is now is relatively better than it was before the final attack. And we have to start bearing in mind that acts like these don’t end. But life doesn’t stop,” he said.

He said resumption of businesses would be put pressure on the state’s own security to protect the industrial projects in progress in the region.

“I have information that some companies are returning. In a timid way, the populations are there. Companies have to start thinking about this,” he noted.

He was speaking on Thursday afternoon in Maputo at a meeting with business leaders..
