Uptake of SSNIT-Ghana Card merger was impressive – SSNIT Boss

As the deadline for Ghanaian workers to merge their Social Security and National Insurance Trust ( SSNIT) with the Ghana Card ended Thursday on June 30, the authority said the process had been impressive as SSNIT recorded an impressive uptake of the numbers.

The deadline for the merger was extended twice from December 31, 2021 to June 30, 2022.

SSNIT had earlier warned contributors may no longer be able to access pensions related services  if they failed to merge the two cards.

As of 2021, a total of 900,000 contributors had merged forcing the authority to extend the deadline.

The integration process began in June 2021 with an expected number of  1.6 million active SSNIT members to be rolled onto the National Identification Authority (NIA) platform by close of 2021.

The Director-General of SSNIT, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang who spoke exclusively to TV3 at the GNAT Investment Forum in Accra on Wednesday June 29, indicated ” Technically, there is no deadline so to speak because if you show up at SSNIT by the June 30 deadline without the Ghana Card, you can still do business because some people have still not obtained their Ghana cards,  but if you are a new member and you are signing on then we will request that you produce your Ghana Card.  The deadline has ended and i must say the uptake has been great but there is still quiet a number of people who have not merged”.

SSNIT in the few coming months will roll out a new programme to enable Ghanaians particularly in the informal sector to sign on to the scheme.

According to the Director- General ” We are going to do a general onboarding process so people can easily swipe their Ghana card and you are automatically a SSNIT contributor and then we also roll out various electronic platforms where people can contribute without leaving their work place.

The transparency will also deepen”. He stressed.
