Green Ghana Day: Prisons Services Commits To Making Project Successful
The Ghana Prisons Service, have pledged their unflinching support for government’s flagship aggressive afforestation project, the Green Ghana Day, slated for June 10th, 2022.
This came to light when the CEO of the Forestry Commission, Mr. John Allotey led a team from the Ministry and the Forestry Commission, to pay a courtesy call on the Director General of the Prisons Service on Friday, 27th May, 2022 to court support from him and his offices for the 2022 Green Ghana Program.
Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir, the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service said he sees the initiative as a National call and pledged their full commitment and participation while calling on all and sundry to get on board.
“I see this Green Ghana Initiative which will happen on the Friday, 10th June, 2022 as a National National Call and we are committed to ensure that it becomes a success. With our presence in other parts of the country, we will ensure we strategize to see how best to make it a success.”
He continued that they are already in collaboration with Zoomlion to clean up the environment and so joining a similar mandate to plant trees and protect the environment, will not be anything foreign to do.
The Director General, as a sign of their commitment nominated Mr. Hansen Adu Oyiku, the Director of Prisons, in charge of Agriculture to represent them on the National Planning committee and hoped the collaboration between the two parties will help make this year’s tree planting exercise a success.
Mr. John Allotey, the CEO of the Forestry Commission, in his initial comments extended appreciation on behalf of the President of the Republic and the Sector Minister for the Service’s support during last year’s edition of the Green Ghana Initiative and called for their support.
The Green Ghana Day, the Chief Executive Officer said is a day that the President of the Republic has set aside for Ghanaians to plant 20 million trees.
He added that, “last year, we planted over five million trees and this year, we have set a very ambitious target of planting twenty million trees on June 10th 2022”.
He added that, “we have two prompt strategies that is to plant 10 million trees in the forest reserves and 10 million for households, medians of roads, waterbodies, schools, recreational grounds, degraded watershed areas, amongst others.
To help support the efforts of the Ministry, Mr. John Allotey disclosed that all the 16 Regional Coordinating Councils have been briefed on the targets for the planting of 20 million trees and hoped that their role will help government’s aggressive afforestation drive and the quest to fight deforestation and climate change.
The CEO hoped that the Ghana Prisons Service will play a representative role on the Operations and Logistics Committee which he said will be of immense benefit.
Also with the CEO on the courtesy call was the Technical Director for Forestry at the Ministry, Mr. Joseph Osiakwan.
