Free SHS has been a big transformation – NDPC

The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) says research conducted in rural areas indicates the government’s free Senior High School (SHS) policy has had an impact on the youth.

The Commission says the policy has resolved some challenges that would have occurred in the future due to lack of education for these students.

The Director-General for NDPC, Dr. Kodjo E. Mensah-Abrampa, made these revelations in an interview on 3FM Sunrise hosted by Alfred Ocansey on Tuesday.

“The effect and impacts of the free SHS has been huge. We went to the districts and it was very very positive”, Dr. Mensah Abrampah explained.

He was worried the people had concerns over the output of such students and how they will fit into the current situation.

“Output, the skills, and knowledge which they acquire and how it fits into the system. The free SHS is a big transformation in this country because when you look at the youth population, the lack of education is creating a problem in the future”.

Basic education

Dr. Mensah Abrampah said “at the basic levels, we realized text books being delayed was affecting teachers but preparation was being made to make the text books accessible to the teachers”.

“In the next assessments, we will look at whether these challenges have been resolved”.
