‘A coup d’état may have happened if we had not passed the E-levy bill’ – Chairman of parliament select committee on finance
Chairman of the Parliamentarian select committee of finance, Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng has said that a coup d’état may have happened in Ghana if the E-levy bill had not been passed into law.
The former deputy finance minister asserts there was a likelihood of a coupe in Ghana due to how the economy was going to crumble in the months ahead had the E-levy not been passed.
Hon. Kwarteng, speaking in an interview with Kwame Appiah Kubi on Kessben FM/TV (Kessben Maakye) stated that the Government considered the E-levy as one of the major revenue measures which if it had not been passed would have led to a crumble of the economy leading to a possible coupe.
He aligned some of the causes of the current hardship in Ghana to the delay in the passage of the E levy bill.
The Obuasi West Member of parliament was quick to add that Ghanaians must put a stop to the attitude of having a high taste for foreign imports which he reckons has contributed to depreciation in the Ghana Cedi.
