Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti tests positive for Covid-19, putting a Chelsea reunion at Stamford Bridge in doubt with their Champions League quarter-final tie next Wednesday
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has tested positive for Covid-19, three days before his side resume their domestic and European campaigns.
The Spanish giants confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday morning and it comes as a blow for Madrid as they gear up for a Champions League clash against Chelsea next week. Before then, they resume their bid for LaLiga glory on Saturday in the early kick-off against Celta Vigo. Real have a handsome nine-point lead at the top Spanish league standings but lost their last match 4-0 against fierce rivals Barcelona.
But they are overwhelming favourites to reclaim the Spanish league this season, after City rivals Atletico won it last year.
Ancelotti will have to test negative in order to make a Stamford Bridge reunion, with Real facing his old club in the Champions League quarter-final stage next week.
Real midfielder Toni Kroos warned his team they face a tough tie against Thomas Tuchel’s defending champions.
‘They are the current Champions League champions, so it couldn’t be more difficult,’ the Germany midfielder said on his podcast last week.
‘There could hardly be a bigger hurdle, but we have to concentrate on ourselves, and if we play well, it’s possible to do a lot of things.
‘We have to try to be very good because that’s what we will have to be to reach the semi-finals.
‘Probably nobody wanted PSG in the last 16, and probably nobody wanted Chelsea in the quarter-finals. But that’s the way things are, and we have to accept them.’
