Apply requisite skills to draw ground water for commercial activities

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has urged stakeholders in the water value chain to apply the requisite skills and the appropriate technology in digging to access ground water for household and commercial activities and operations.
Addressing participants at a workshop for groundwater drilling entities in the country, the Director of CSIR, Prof. Mike Osei Atweneboana said drillers of water must build capacities to be abreast with the emerging trends in the drilling space to enhance water productivity.
The workshop was organised by the Water Resource Commission, CSIR, International Management Institute and the Water Resource Institute under the theme, “Exploring Groundwater Resources for multiple Uses in Ghana”.
It a created a platform for participants to discuss and deliberate on issues and challenges in water drilling operations as well as the adoption of best practices to meet modern standards.
According to Prof. Osei-Atweneboana, accessing groundwater is quite difficult hence new innovations and cutting edge facilities should be used to access the water adding that operators have to dig as far as 100 feet and beyond to reach out to water.
“Water plays a significant role in human endeavour therefore water must be given the needed treatment to enhance the quality of life of the consuming public”, he added.
The Director of CSIR hinted that the northern part of Ghana usually experiences dry seasons which run through months and explained that it is for these reasons that the drilling of groundwater comes to the fore with the appropriate technologies to enhance agricultural human needs and other related water projects.
For her part the West Africa Representative at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Dr. Olefunke Cofie urged players in the water sector to engage in networking and come out with pragmatic solutions in addressing water challenges as an alternative to other areas of generating and the production of quality of water.
“Water is essential to the livelihood of humanity and a daily use in the fields of agriculture as well as household chores and commercial activities”, she stressed and added that water plays a vital role in the life of human activities hence the quality of it is of paramount importance to the consuming public.
