Bantama and Obuasi West NPP members picket at party’s national headquarters over ‘unfair’ polling station executive elections

Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members from the Obuasi West and Bantama constituencies have resolved to picket at the National Headquarters of the party over what they have described as unfair polling station executive elections.

They alleged that in some situations they were illegally disqualified from contesting due to non-payment of dues. Some of the aspirants said their names were deleted from the album preventing them from contesting in the elections.

According to them, all attempts to get their grievances resolved have fallen on deaf ears. The disgruntled members from Obuasi West have therefore called on the National Executives to intervene and re-run the elections.

“We are not going to tolerate anything unless the National Committee of Elections comes in to make our plea heard and re-run the elections, We are not going to back down on what we are asking for,” one of the disgruntled members told Joy News.

Meanwhile, the delegation from the Bantama Constituency has threatened to vote for candidates in the opposition NDC in the next general elections if their concerns are not addressed.

“We used voter’s ID card to vote for the party, not NPP card. Now they are using the party’s card to vote so no matter who you are if you use your ID card, your vote is not counted. I want the leaders of the party to explain to us whether it is the party’s card or the ID card that is being used for elections. If it’s the ID card, then the elections for the album should be annulled and Bantama taken out or else votes for Bantama constituency will go to the opposition NDC or independent candidate in the next general elections,” one of the members said.

Conflicts have rocked some electoral areas as the governing NPP begins reorganising processes ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Although the election of polling station executives comes off soon, some party members have accused their executives of hoarding the forms.

The February incidents include, Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region, where some NPP members locked up the constituency chairman on Saturday.

Similar agitations transpired in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region and Ningo-Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.

Manhyia North and Ho Central constituencies have registered some debacles as well.

Currently, some party members in New Juaben North and Sunyani East have petitioned the court to seek an injunction on their respective polling station elections.
