Official : Ghana Takes Seat At The UN Security Council

Ghana has taken its seat at the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

Four other countries have also joined the UN Security Council.

On Tuesday, January 4, 2021, there was a flag-raising ceremony at the UN Headquarters in New York to officially signal Ghana and the four others taking their seat on the Security Council.

The five countries are to serve on the Council for a two-year term as non-permanent members.

It would be recalled that Ghana, Gabon, Brazil, United Arab Emirates and Albania were elected in June 2021 by the General Assembly to sit on the Security Council as non-permanent members with effect from January 1, 2022.

Kenya has been on the Council since January 2021 and its two-year term will expire at the end of December 2022.

Come November 2022, Ghana is scheduled to preside over the Security Council.

It would be recalled that Ghana received the support of 185 out of 190 countries during the General Assembly vote, more than any of the five nations elected to the Council.

Gabon received 183 votes, Brazil 181, United Arab Emirates 179, and Albania 175.
