Step aside to contest the run-off or focus on your flagbearer ambition – CPP Gen Sec tells National Chair

The General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) Nana Yaa Akempem Jantuah has thrown a challenge to the party’s chairperson Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah to step aside and contest in the run-off of the chairmanship position if she thinks she is that popular in the CPP.

“Besides, she wants to be a flagbearer and I believe that if that is her dream, then she should just go and be a flagbearer, start campaigning for the flagbearer position. But if she wants to be a chairperson, the condition is that by the constitutional provision, she should step down.” Nana Yaa Jantuah said.

In an interview with Dzifa Bampoh on the The Key Points on TV3 last Saturday, the General Secretary of the CPP explained that Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah could not attain the required votes of 50% or more needed to be legitimately elected as chairperson during the CPP’s chairmanship election in August 2020.

She explained that, in the wisdom of the framers of the party’s constitution, for one to be a chairman, it must be seen that the chairman of the party is popular enough that when there is crisis in the party, he or she can command troops to make sure the crisis is calmed.

“If she is popular as we are all saying, you have 43% standing for you, you need only 8%, so you are working for only 8% of the votes; It shouldn’t  be a problem”   Nana Yaa Jantuah asserted

The CPP General Secretary disclosed that the party leadership by consensus allowed Madam Akosua Frimpomaa to act as the Chairperson though she got 43 % due to COVID 19 and the closeness to the 2020 General Elections.

She again argues that till the first runner-up decides not to contest in a runoff, then the rerun of the chairmanship election is inevitable.

“If we can’t uphold our own party’s constitution, how can we uphold the national constitution when we are in power”? Nana Yaa quizzed

The Central Committee of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has resolved that the breach of Article 93 (e) of the Party Constitution can only be rectified by carrying out a mandatory run-off between the two candidates who obtained the highest number of votes to select a winner as prescribed by Article 93 (f) of the Party’s Constitution.

It has therefore directed the Chairperson of the party, Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah to step aside.
