Tuna Industry Can Offer Jobs For 30% Unemployed Youth-TUMASGHA Executive Member Claims

The Executive Organiser for the Tuna Merchants Association of Ghana (TUMASGHA), Mr. Michael Nana Asah Akunnor says the Tuna Industry has the capacity to address the unemployment situation in the country.

According to him, with financial support from the government, about 30 percent of the unemployed youth in the country can be offered jobs at the various chain of businesses in the Tuna Industry.

Speaking to the media at the inauguration of the Tuna Merchants Association of Ghana at the GHACEM Club House in Tema Community 5, Mr. Akunnor reiterated that regardless of the challenges in the Tuna Industry, the government’s effort to create employment for the teeming unemployed youth can be realized in the industry.

He explained that there are opportunities for Ghanaian crew to be employed in the Vessel, whereas others can be employed to do the picking of the tuna from the Vessel.

He added that employment opportunities are available at the cold store and the retailing sector as well as security and other jobs, making the Tuna Industry lucrative enough for the government to focus on it to resolve the unemployment situation in the country.

“The Tuna Industry is such that at the end of the day, individuals working in the industry will get their daily bread. This industry offers a lot of employment opportunities and so we will plead with the government to focus on this industry as a place to solve the unemployment challenge confronting the country”, he pleaded.

The Executive Organiser for the Tuna Merchants Association of Ghana mentioned capital intensive as one of the main challenges in the Tuna Industry and therefore pleaded with the government to support the industry with some grants to expand the industry in order for them to employ a lot of the unemployed youth in the country.

Mr. Asah Akunnor however was hopeful that the launch of the Tuna Merchants Association of Ghana will enhance the progress of the Tuna Industry as well as its stakeholders.
