Music comedy: Kenny Blaq explains the dynamics of comedy-music relationship

Nigeria’s Kenny Blaq had an in-depth conversation on TV3’s NewDay about the struggle, challenges and fulfilment as a music comedian who popularises the continent’s niche.

As a standup comedian, Otolorin Kehinde Peter decided to infuse music in his act to stand out from his peers. A move, he notes, that has brought him to immerse recognition and inspired others to follow his lead.

“When you are doing something well, people will want to try it, and people will want to emulate it. Everybody likes to jump on trends. So when I started a lot of people tried to do what I do.

“There are now music comedians who do music comedy but not exactly the kind of music comedy I do. They have been able to interpret their own genre of music comedy. I do all genres of music-comedy. So i have been able to inspire people.”

Musical comedy has entertained people for years with puns and wordplay in a lyrical rhythm accompanied by instrumentals (optional).

Kenny Blaq also shared the ups and downs of twisting and bending words into a singsong comedy form.

“For a musician, you struggle to put songs together. For a comedian, you struggle to put the punchline, the one-liners, the storytelling and the highlight. But I get to do all of them at the same time. I have to make sure that the music is interesting and funny, at the same.”
