We say break the 8 but we’re planning how to bring ourselves down – Henry Quartey to NPP

Greater Accra regional Minister, Henry Quartey has criticised some members of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who are scheming to bring him down because in their view, he is becoming too powerful.

He said such behaviour is not good for the desire to break the 8-year cycle.

Speaking at the NPP’s Greater Accra Regional Delegates Conference in Accra on Thursday, October 14, 2021, Mr Quratey said “We sit here and say, break the eight, break the eight, and you are holding meetings among yourselves to bring somebody down. I am sad today and I will explain why.

“When the President gave me the position to be the Regional Minister, he among other things wanted me to be able to unite the party at the grassroots. That I have been doing, and so I thought, people, will stop speaking behind our backs.

“But just last week, some people met and said, I am getting too much power in the region, so they are planning to bring me down. But when you do this, how do we break the eight?”

“All I am doing is working for all of us. All we care about is our personal ambitions but let’s all realize that we have one agenda to break the eight,” the lawmaker for the Ayawaso Central said.

He asked members of the party to desist from the insults on social media and channel that energy into ensuring that the agenda to break to 8 materializes.

“Social media has become a platform for us to insult leaders of the party. We wash our dirty linen on social media and when people are cautioned, they will tell you, the party belongs to all of us.

“There must be discipline in the party. If people misbehave, suspend them. We’re already in power and therefore any inaction or misbehaviour of ours, will hurt our chances of retaining that power come 2024,” he said.

Regarding the agenda break the 8, the Vice President had said earlier that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is determined to hand over power to another government of NPP in the 2024 elections.

He described that desire of Mr Akufo-Addo as absolute hence, the president is working tirelessly to ensure his government succeeds over the next four years.

Speaking at a TESCON conference in Cape on Saturday August 7, he said “Breaking the 8 is a political pursuit that requires us to gird our loins together, build a strong Party and deliver competently on our mandate.

“Thankfully, we are led by a commander-in-chief, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and in fact he is the commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, whose passion and determination to hand over power to an NPP president in 2025 is absolute. That is why we see the president working tirelessly to make sure we succeed as a government and Party.

“We saw elections 2020 and the affirmative verdict of the Ghanaian people on our first term performance. It was a victory and endorsement of the competent work we did in our first term. We have begun our second term which is a build-up on what we did in the first term. As our 2020 manifesto indicated, this term will see to the consolidation of the many laudable initiatives we undertook in the first term, many of which have led to solutions that have never been seen since independence.”
