Uganda jab distributor makes it mandatory for staff

The Ugandan government agency in charge of distributing Covid-19 vaccines to government health facilities has told all staff and visitors to present proof they’re fully vaccinated.

Anyone who is not fully vaccinated must present a negative PCR test taken in the last 72 hours, to be allowed in.

In a statement, the National Medical Stores said it was leading by example. Those affected by the orders include directors of public hospitals, pharmacists, suppliers as wells donors, and politicians.

Uganda has so far received 5.6 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines – some procured, others donated – but just 2.3 million people have received their jabs and 580,000 are fully vaccinated.

Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng on Wednesday partly blamed the slow uptake on accessibility, inadequate vaccines in certain areas, few vaccination points as well as hesitancy.

The government plan is to vaccinate 4.8 million of its priority group that includes health workers and teachers by December this year. The full reopening of the economy is pegged on vaccinations.
