Removing 16 pesewas on fuel prices is too insignificant to reduce fares – GPRTU

The Secretary of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has said the two-month removal of the Price Stabilization, and Recovery levy on petroleum products is very insignificant to cause a change in transportation fares.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA), on Monday in a press statement announced the approval of the removal of the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levies (PRSL) on petrol, diesel, and LPG for two months.

“The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) wishes to inform the public that His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has granted approval to zero the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levies on petrol, diesel, and LPG for a period of two months.

The above approval follows the advice of the NPA to the Hon. Minister of Energy to seek government’s intervention to mitigate the impact of rising prices of petroleum products on the world market on consumers.

“Prices of crude oil and refined petroleum products have seen sharp increases on the world market due to a rise in demand for oil globally without a corresponding increase in supply, particularly from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies.” The statement said.

The Ghana Private Transport Union says despite the move by the government to relieve the citizenry, the effect of the removal of the levy can’t cause any changes in fares. Mr Godfred Abulbire Adogma speaking in an interview Omanhene Yaw Adu Boakye on Kessben FM/TV underscored that the abortion of 16 pesewas levy on fuel prices won’t have any real impact as is insignificant.

The General Secretary of the Union stressed that it will have been comforting if the stabilization and the recovery levy is completely removed.
