Pay KMA’s GHS50M debt else we reject Sam Pyne as KMA Mayor – Assembly members

Assembly members in the Kumasi Metropolitan area have threatened to reject President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nominee, Samuel Pyne as the Kumasi Mayor if the government fails to clear over GHS50 million debt the Assembly owes.

They say the Assembly’s indebtedness has significantly contributed to the underdevelopment of the metropolitan.

Speaking after the president announced the list of MMDCEs on Sunday, the Presiding Member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly indicated on Kessben 92.9, 93.3 FM/TV that if the debt owed by the assembly is not settled the assembly will reject Samuel Pyne as the Mayor for Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

Presiding Member for the assembly, Stephen Ofori noted that they don’t have any problem with the newly nominated Mayor of KMA but it is his office as chief executive officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly where lies their contention.

“We’re not dealing with the person who has been nominated. Sam Pyne is our brother but we’re talking about the office of the chief executive officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. If they don’t pay the debt, it will be difficult for us to confirm the new Mayor.”

”We have talked about the debt over years. It’s about the sanitation fund as we all know. We were three Assemblies, Tema, Accra, and Kumasi. Tema and Accra have all received theirs but as of now, Kumasi has not received any monies.”

”When the outgoing mayor Hon. Osei Assibey came, we informed him but it was just back and forth, they said we should use our common fund to clear that.”

”Let me state again, for us, we don’t have any problem with the newly nominated Mayor but it will take our vote to approve him” He stated on Breaking News.

Assemblymen across Ghana will within the 21 days vote on the various nominated appointees to confirm or reject them at their assemblies.
