MMDCE appointment should be about competence, not who has served the party – Omanhene

Host of Amansan Ntie on Kessben 92.9, Kessben 93.3 FM/TV, Omanhene Yaw Adu Boakye says competence should be over loyalty in appointing Metropolitan, Municipal, and Chief Executives.

In most African countries, particularly Ghana, government appointments are made to reward party members who have served the party in various forms but Omanhene on Amansan Ntie program on Saturday 18th September 2021 stressed the need for the appointments of MMDCEs be made on the lines of competence.

“It should be about competence, not someone who has served the party” He stated.

Many have called for the need to have a change in the constitution for MMDCE appointments not to be exclusive to only the president.

Labour experts have over the years suggested that the appointments of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives should be open to all Ghanaians to apply.

”Just like any professional field which requires expert knowledge, MMDCEs should also be equipped with the needed knowledge and competence to steer their offices. In so doing, this will wipe away the winner takes it all element in the Ghanaian governance structure.”

It has been 9 months into president Akufo-Addo’s second term in office and appointments of MMDCEs have still not been made.

Communication Director at the presidency, Eugene Arhin confirmed last Thursday stated that the president has finalized the appointments of the MMDCEs and handed the list to the local government minister, Hon Dan Botwe who will announce the appointments on Sunday 19th September 2021.
