Official Visit of the Mayor of Aarhus (Denmark) to Ghana 1-3 October

Denmark has been active in Ghana’s water sector through many decades of development cooperation as well as commercial collaboration. Ghana faces a number of challenges in stable water delivery, non- revenue water and waste water management where Danish solutions, technologies and experience are making a difference. Denmark works with a range of actors and instruments in the water sector focusing on partnerships and expanding the commercial collaboration between Denmark and Ghana towards the attainment of SDG#6 – Clean Water and Sanitation.
The Danish city of Aarhus, Aarhus Vand (the water utility company in Aarhus), Tema Metropolitan Assembly and Ghana Water Company Ltd. have been engaging in a good collaboration on the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) in Urban Water since 2019. The overall objective of this cooperation is to improve wastewater management, reduce non-revenue water and make the city of Tema climate friendly and resilient.
The Mayor of the city of Aarhus, Jacob Bundsgaard will pay a working visit to Ghana from 1-3 October 2023. He will be accompanied by the CEO of Aarhus Vand, Karina Topp and other officials from
Aarhus Municipality.
During the visit, Mr. Bundsgaard will appraise the ongoing activities in the SSC and jointly sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mayor of Tema, the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited and the Chief Executive Officer of Aarhus Vand, building up to the second phase of the SSC for the next three years, 2024-2026. The second phase will focus on upscaling the activities and lessons learnt in Tema in other parts of Ghana.
The Mayor of Aarhus Jacob Bundsgaard says: “ The world is facing quite a few critical challenges relating to water distribution and management. Aarhus is leading the way as a global hub for sustainable and innovative water technology solutions. Together with public and private stakeholders in the Ghanaian water sector, we will create world- class water solutions and improve the lives of the citizens of Tema and Ghana. ”
The Ambassador of Denmark to Ghana, Tom Nørring, adds that: “ One of the most positive experiences in my three years sofaras Ambassador to Ghana, has been to follow the development of the SSC in Urban Water. A true partnership where expert-to-expert exchanges have resulted in strong capacity building in the Ghanaian water sector. Looking forward to taking this unique cooperation to the next stage. ”
