A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a baby died and a toddler was left fighting for life in a suspected stabbing.

Police were scrambled to Belfast in Northern Ireland last night following the horror.

Tragically the eight-week-old baby couldn’t be saved and was declared dead at the scene.

The two-year-old child was rushed to hospital and remains in a critical condition in intensive care.

According to reports, the children were both stabbed.

Police confirmed a 29-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

They said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the killing.

HORROR ATTACK

Horrified locals had helped police before ambulance crews arrived after the bloodbath unfolded last night.

Cllr Paul McCusker said: “Police are continuing their investigations of what happened in Brompton Park.

“We now need to give them time to do this without speculating and think about those involved and the wider family.

“Lots of shock from residents, some assisting police before the ambulance service arrived.”

SDLP Deputy Leader Nichola Mallon has said her thoughts are with the family.

North Belfast MP John Finucane said the incident has left the local community “beyond shocked and heartbroken”.

He said: “The community of Ardoyne and beyond are shocked and heartbroken as the police have now confirmed the murder of a young child and another in critical condition.

“The thoughts of all of our community are with the family involved.

“I would also appeal to everyone to be mindful of what has happened and not to post or share anything which would add to the distress of those involved or the local community.”

Detective Chief Inspector Millar from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team said: “Police were called to the house shortly after 8pm last night and discovered the injured baby and another injured child in the house.

“Despite the efforts of the emergency services the baby was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The other young child was taken to hospital and remains in intensive care.

“A 29 year woman who was also in the house has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in custody at this time.

“Our thoughts are with the baby’s family, who are being supported by Family Liaison Officers.

“While our investigation is at any early stage I can confirm that at this stage, we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this tragic death.

“I would like to thank the local community for the support that they have provided and would appeal to anyone with any information that can assist our investigation to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 1787 27/07/21.”
