Ejurahene calls for calm
Meanwhile, the chief of Ejura in the Ashanti Region Barima Osei Hwedie II on Wednesday appealed for calm as the protest-hit town awaits a report and recommendations by the Justice Kingsely Koomson Committee.
The Committee was tasked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of two people during an encounter with protesters and armed security personnel on 29 June.
The incident sparked widespread disquiet among the general public, especially from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who called for removal of top security chiefs in the municipality.
But speaking during a community engagement, Barima Hwedie II expressed confidence in the government to put matters to rest.
He also advised the youth to live peacefully and not to take the law into their own hands.
Arrests
The civil unrest in Ejura erupted when Ibrahim Mohammed “Kaaka”, 45, was reportedly attacked by unknown people in the small hours of Sunday 27 June.
He died on Monday (28 June) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where he was receiving treatment.
At least two suspects have been arrested in connection with his murder.
Two suspects – Ibrahim Issaka and Fuseini Alhassan – were picked up on Monday evening in response to police intelligence.
Security personnel then fired into an angry crowd of youth in the town after the funeral of “Kaaka” on 29 June, killing Abdul Nasiw and Muntala Mohammed.
