I don’t think I’II be Greenstreet’s running mate – Samia
A former Chairperson of the Convection People’s Party (CPP), who recently lost her bid to lead the party into the November general elections, Samia Nkrumah, appears to have closed the door to the possibility of partnering the party’s Presidential Candidate, Ivor Greenstreet, saying she will instead choose to represent the party in Parliament. In what many considered to be a shocking outcome in Saturday’s Delegates Congress, Greenstreet fended off competition from Samia Nkrumah, daughter of the party’s Founder, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who was widely tipped to emerge victorious.
Samia, who was defeated alongside two others, has not taken it lightly, accusing Greenstreet of vote-buying; a claim the former General Secretary has vehemently denied. Some have suggested that Samia could be selected to partner Greenstrteet as his running mate, but the former Jomoro MP, who according to Greenstreet has not called to congratulate him, has ruled out any such possibility. She has already made known her intentions to contest the Jomoro seat in the Western Region for the second time after losing the seat in 2012.
Although one would have thought that after losing a parliamentary seat, resigning as a Chairperson and now losing her bid to be a Presidential Candidate, accepting to be a running mate, would have been ideal. But in an interview with Bernard Avle on ‘The Ghana Report’ on Viasat One TV, Samia, who would not give a straightforward answer to the question of whether she would accept an offer to partner Greenstreet said, “I don’t think so. I think I can serve my party better as a parliamentary candidate in these elections.” “I’m humble and I’m modest and I feel I’ve been a parliamentarian before and I think I can get more votes,” she added. When quizzed further, Samia Nkrumah said it was up to Mr. Greenstreet to decide if she would join the presidential ticket as his running mate. According to her, “Whatever we decide anyway, we decide as a party. Ivor has not asked me to so I don’t think that is on the cards” she said.
