Kumasi traders stage another demo over relocation

Some traders at the race course market in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on Monday demonstrated against the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to press home demands for a better trading environment. The demonstration is also to protest the KMA’s failure to evict their colleagues still selling on the streets of the city.
The traders are worried their colleagues are still hawking, three months after they were evicted from the Kejetia bus terminal. They were evicted from the terminal in July, 2015 to pave way for the redevelopment of the bus terminal but some of their colleagues are  reportedly still selling at the old site. Speaking to Citi News, one of the demonstrators explained that their protest is to compel the KMA to meet their demands. “This place is not a convenient place at all. It is a very busy road so it is difficult for people to even stop by and buy anything from us. We are pleading with KMA to relocate us to a better trading environment.”
Another said : “we are not happy with what KMA is doing. The new place that KMA has given us is not good. When it rains it gets muddy. We have asked them to relocate us or give us our monies back.” Traders have in the past staged various demonstrations to protest a relocation to the Adehyeman market for phase one of the reconstruction of the Central Market at Kejetia to begin. One of those demonstrations which was dubbed “Kwaterekwa” was to draw government’s attention to their plight.
