Top French journalist admits Andre Ayew critics got it wrong
It was cheekily dubbed the ‘Pretty, Sh***y City’ in cult film Twin Town, but one outspoken French journalist reckons Andre Ayew is proving it all wrong after claiming the Ghana ace is showing the cynics why he was right to move to Swansea.Ayew attracted criticism in France when he quit Marseille for the Mumbles, with many believing the World Cup star had gone simply for the salary having walked away from Champions League football.
Although the 25-year-old is thought to have received a bumper signing on fee as part of his switch to South Wales, Swans boss Garry Monk suggested that wasn’t the case as he claimed contract talks were all about the football.
And Ayew’s father – African idol Abedi Pele – has also revealed his son turned down potential moves to Atletico Madrid and Roma to join the Swans, while West Ham chief David Sullivan has gone on record with his frustration at seeing him snub a move to Upton Park.
Now, after Ayew collected the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award for August as part of the Swans’ unbeaten start to the campaign, Canal journalist Pierre Menes has claimed Ayew has shown he knew what he was doing all along.
‘It was said that Andre Ayew to Swansea was a crappy choice,’ he told Onze Mondial in France.
‘But when we see the early season (form) for the Welsh club, we can say that this is not so sh***y.
‘And then you have to put yourself in the place of the player. He took a big cheque on arrival and has the salary that goes with it. Above all, he will play twice against Arsenal, Chelsea, United, City, Liverpool, Tottenham … In a year, it’s 12 games similar to those in the Champions League.’
