James Rodriguez tops the Player Power Rankings ahead of Andre Ayew
1. James Rodriguez (Real Madrid)
With two goals and an assist in his side’s 5-0 thrashing of Real Betis, James Rodriguez was the star of the show. The Colombian managed 13 goals and 13 assists in his debut la Liga season and looks set to be a key man in the Rafa Benitez revolution at the Bernabeu.
2. Andre Ayew (Swansea)
The signing of the summer? It’s hard to argue against Ayew right now, especially after he inspired Swansea’s comeback win against Manchester United. With his side trailing 1-0, Ayew equalised with a fine header before setting up Bafetimbi Gomis’ winner.
3. Bakary Sako (Crystal Palace)
A week after scoring the winner in his debut, Sako was decisive again as Palace stunned Chelsea. The Malian gave his side the lead and then, after Chelsea levelled, set up Joel Ward’s winner. It’s fair to say Sako has made a good impression at Selhurst Park since his summer move from Wolves.
4. Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)
PSG march on France and Cavani was to the fore in their latest win, a 3-0 triumph at Monaco. The Uruguayan opened the scoring with a header before finishing following a delightful Zlatan Ibrahimovic through ball. He might be criticized for not scoring in the biggest games, but Cavani’s overall production cannot be questioned.
5. Nabil Fekir (Lyon)
Having established himself with 15 goals in Ligue 1 last season, Fekir has picked up where he left off. The 22-year-old notched a hat trick in Lyon’s 4-0 win at Caen, scoring a goal with each of the three shots he took. If his club are to challenge for the title again, Fekir must keep scoring.
6. Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
If that £49 million price tag has added pressure, Sterling is doing a pretty good job of not showing it. The 20-year-old scored his first Manchester City goal on Saturday and was, once again, a livewire presence on the left wing for the Premier League leaders, who won their fourth straight game to start the season.
7. Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)
With five goals in three games, Muller has started the Bundesliga season in sensational form. His latest display was a two-goal performance on the occasion of his 200th league appearance, in which he passed up the chance for a hat trick by letting Arjen Robben take a late penalty. What a nice chap!
8. Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)
The jury is still out on whether Bale can effectively play as a No. 10 but, against the relatively modest opposition provided by Betis, the Welshman impressed with two goals and an assist. Repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United, isn’t it more likely that Bale establishes himself as Madrid’s main man this season?
9. Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli)
Last season came to a harrowing end for Higuain, whose penalty miss vs. Lazio effectively ended Napoli’s Champions League hopes. The Argentine found his scoring touch on Sunday, netting a first-half brace vs. Sampdoria, although Napoli ultimately gave up their 2-0 lead and had to settle for a point.
10. Luiz Adriano (AC Milan)
After a week in which much of the talk around Milan concerned Mario Balotelli’s return to the club, Adriano chose an opportune time to register his first goal in red and black. The Brazilian, who scored nine goals in the Champions League for Shakhtar Donetsk last season, struck Milan’s winner vs. Empoli
