Government postpones ban on second-hand tyres
The implementation of a ban on the importation of substandard tyres has been postponed by government.
The implementation was scheduled for this month, but has now been put on hold to address concerns raised by second hand tyre dealers over aspects of the law.
Provisions of the law state that tyres that are more than four years old from the manufacturing date cannot be used in the country.
But sellers of the used product have asked for more time, complaining about aspects of the new law.
“We are going to defend our business. We are going to portray to the whole world that we sell second hand tyres but we don’t sell inferior ones. Besides, not many people in Ghana can afford brand new tyres so it is important that this regulation is given another look,” an aggrieved tyre dealer said.
