The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into allegations that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) officials have diverted funds from the party’s bank accounts. The First Vice National Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay and the National Treasurer of the same party, Abankwa Yeboah have been accused of diverting funds belonging to the party. Both have also been accused of allegedly opening an unapproved Ecobank account.
Mr. Abankwa Yeboah in an interview with Citi News denied the claims. According to Mr. Yeboah, his detractors are scheming to indict him and Freddy Blay but they are all ” political distractions.”
In a related development, Mr. Freddie Blay has declined an invitation by the Police CID, saying the issue is a party matter and should be dealt with internally. But speaking to Citi News, PRO of the Criminal Investigation Department, ASP Benefo Darkwa says all persons named in the petition will be duly invited for questioning as part of the investigations. “Our mandate is to investigate criminal issues, that also does not mean someone has committed any crime, but it is only after investigations that we will be able to tell whether a crime has been committed or not,” ASP Benefo Darkwa was however unable to disclose the identity of the petitioner over the said allegations. “…As to where the petition is coming from, then because it is not coming from this quarters we don’t have to, No, we have the mandate to investigate every criminal case,” he said.
