President John Mahama will today, Friday July 3, 2015 pay a Presidential visit to the Nsawam medium prisons.
He is visiting the facility after granting amnesty to over 900 prisoners to commemorate Ghana’s Republic Day on Wednesday, July 1.
This is the first time a sitting Ghanaian president has visited any prison in the country.
The Chairman of the Prisons Council, Reverend Stephen Wengam, said both inmates and prison wardens are upbeat about the President’s visit.
“It is a Christmas Day for us. This is the first time a sitting President is visiting a prison and we are excited about it. We are happy that the president is coming around to see us and also see for himself the real state of affairs at the prisons,” Wengam said.
Meanwhile, authorities at the Prisons have denied claims that they are transferring prisoners ahead of the President’s visit.
