EC suspends continuous voter registration

The Electoral Commission has put on hold the continuous registration of voters “pending a thorough discussion of the matter with IPAC.”
This follows intense pressure from campaigners, Let My Vote Count, and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have raised concerns about the process, saying stakeholders were not consulted.
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also said they were left in the dark.
The People’s National Convention on Tuesday asked the EC to immediately convene an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to address the commotion surrounding the ongoing voter registration exercise.
According to a statement from the EC on Tuesday, “the Chairman of the Electoral Commission has directed that though continuous registration of voters is a facility under the law, the formal resumption of the registration must be put on hold pending a thorough discussion of the matter with IPAC.”
“All District Officers of the Commission and the general public are to take note of this directive and comply,” the statement signed by acting director of Public Affairs Christian Owusu-Parry said.
