Some members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Executive Committee on Monday, December 9, decided in a meeting to lease the current KMA building.
The meeting, chaired by Mayor Kojo Bonsu, had 23 out of the 42 executive committee members who formed a quorum to deliberate on a proposal to lease their present building in order to build a new office complex for the assembly.
Speaking to Kessben Television, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, spokesperson for the Mayor, explained that the current KMA building is too old and cannot accommodate modern technology.
He added that the assembly has offices scattered around town which does not promote easy supervision and coordination.
Mr Gyamfi lauded the Mayor’s proposition to lease the assembly’s existing building to raise funds that will help guarantee a loan for an ultra-modern office complex.
The proposed facility will have Wi-fi, modern record keeping, a 2,000-seater theatre, a 300-seater conference room for assembly meetings, and many other important amenities for the effective running of the assembly.
Nineteen out of the 23 executive members voted in favor of the bid, while the other four were against the proposition, the spokesperson revealed.
Although the proposal has not reached the assembly, many of the assembly members have expressed their dissatisfaction over the idea to lease the KMA building and lambasted the mayor, allegedly suspecting him of shady dealings.
The KMA building will not be leased out until the ultra-modern facility has been completed.
