The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, was forced to suspend sitting today after MPs exchange words over the arrest in the UK of a Ghanaian woman carrying cocaine.
The debate, which was meant to be centred on the 2015 budget, turned to the cocaine incident in which the woman, Nayele Ametefeh, is alleged to have ties with the NDC government.
When called to contribute to the 2015 budget debate, Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul, brought out two bags of rice which he said weighed 12.5 kilograms, the same size as the amount of cocaine smuggled out of Ghana by Ms Ametefeh to Heathrow, London recently.
Mr Nitiwul questioned how the woman, also going by the name Ruby Adu Gamfi, was able to go through security at the Kotoka International Airport with such a large quantity of drugs.
The MP for Bimbilla said the lady could not have gone through the boarding gates without assistance from security personnel there. He went further to accuse the government of collaborating with drug barons.
The Majority responded with counter-accusations. The exchange descended into chaos forcing the Speaker to suspend the proceedings for the day.
The Speaker subsequently summoned the leadership of both sides to his office to talk over the issue after he suspended sitting.
