Twelve labour unions at the centre of a stand-off with Government over their Tier 2 pensions have hinted that they may embark on a nationwide strike on November 20 despite ongoing negotiations.
Mr Kwadwo Awotwe Nkansah, Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana National Association Of Teachers (GNAT), said even though their lawyers would be in court today over the Tier 2 pension cash, they may still go ahead with a demonstration to register their displeasure to Government over Labour Minister Haruna Iddrisu’s handling of the issue.
Mr Nkansah said: “The Minister has failed to handle this correctly. As a former NUGS (National Union of Ghana Students) president, much was expected of him when it comes to labour unrest.”
The GNAT Deputy Secretary General told Kumasi-based radio station Kessben FM that the minister had behaved in a “childish way” when the parties were asked to go the negotiating table by the courts.
He urged all members of the labour union to monitor the court proceedings keenly. Since October, public sector workers have been demanding their Tier 2 pension funds.
The unions want Government and the National Pension Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to transfer the funds into a private trust of their choosing for management.
