Kumasi sees rise in child beggars

Kumasi is seeing an increase in child beggars or children being used by adults to assist them with begging.
Two siblings, Adwoa Adjeiwaa Kodie, aged about 11 years and Karikari, about 8 years old, were found loitering about in Adum, Kumasi begging.
They said they travelled from Bekwai Apramaso in the Ashanti Region almost daily to beg.
They gave their father’s name as Wofa Agyemang and mother’s name as Frimpomaa who sells banana at a neighborhood at Bekwai called SDA.
In an interview with Kessben TV, a member of the public said: “I have been observing these kids for sometime, I saw them arguing over money and that made me approach them. After interviewing them, I realised they beg for money without the consent of their parents. It’s sad, but that is the situation they find themselves in.”

The youngsters said they only approach people who are well dressed and usually get what they want, although some people hurl abuse at them at times.
