It’s illegal to freeze our salary – POTAG tells Gov't

The vice president of the Greater Accra branch of the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana ( POTAG), Jones Ntiamoah, has said it would be illegal for government to freeze the salaries of striking lecturers.
Reports have been rife about government’s decision to withhold the August salaries of POTAG lecturers who have been on strike for over three months.
The Education Minister Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has in the past urged POTAG to call off its strike. She is reported to have directed the Accountant General on Friday not to pay the striking teachers.
The call for the salaries of striking polytechnic lecturers to be withheld began with the former Security Advisor Brigadier Nunoo Mensah, who said he could not understand why lecturers should be receiving salaries while at home.
The lecturers are protesting the non-payment of their book and research allowance which is in arrears for several months.
