Thibaut Courtois beats Petr Cech to Chelsea goalkeeper spot
Thibaut Courtois is expected to make his Chelsea Premier League debut tonight as Jose Mourinho launches his new-look side into combat.
Mourinho, as expected, kept his goalkeepers waiting on his decision but it is the young Belgian, who returned from three years on loan at Atletico Madrid this summer, who is ready to get the call.
That means the future of Cech, 32, who has won three League titles and one Champions League among a host of other trophies in 10 years at Stamford Bridge, is now under question.
Cech has said he would not be happy to sit on the bench at Chelsea as second choice keeper – though yesterday he tweeted that he would “always” fight for his spot – and several clubs, including Paris Saint Germain, Real Madrid and Monaco are all ready with bids.
Didier Drogba, who has recovered quickly from an ankle problem that was expected to keep him out for as much as a fortnight, is expected to be on the bench at Turf Moor tonight, with Burnley’s captain Jason Shackell ready to put mind over matter.
Mourinho’s men will provide Burnley with a baptism of fire as they launch their bid for Premier League survival.
But Shackell insists the Clarets will be mentally prepared thanks to their work with high-performance thinking specialist Simon Clarkson.
“He’s someone the gaffer has brought in just to help with a few things and he has been great,” said the defender, who will be out to try and shackle £32million striker Diego Costa tonight.
“He doesn’t come in too regularly but when he does he delivers a little presentation with quite powerful messages and I think the lads buy into everything he has done.
“I think the general message is, ‘we’re not going to get it all like we did last year’ but it’s about not getting too low with the lows and not getting too high with the highs.
“It’s just trying to keep it on a nice even keel. There are key messages and he thinks a little bit outside the box, which is nice.”
