Ghana law stipulates that no landlord should take more than 6 months’ rent advance – Minister of works & housing, Asenso Boakye

The minister of works and housing, Hon Francis Asenso Boakye has reiterated that the laws of Ghana clearly underscore that, renters are not supposed to pay more than 6 months rent advance.

Speaking on Kessben FM’s Maakye with Akuoko Kwarteng, the minister however underlined that the implementation of this rent law has become extremely difficult due to the limited houses in the country.

According to him, due to the fact that there are many who are looking for houses to rent, landlords have taken advantage of the situation and thus have been taking a minimum of 2 years rent advance from renters.

He noted that the situation has become more normal not only because of the landlords taking advantage of the situation but also the renters who in their bid to get quick accommodation make such offers to the landlords.

He revealed that his ministry has set up a scheme that has made it possible for renters to rent homes and pay monthly after successful application and verification.

According to him, the scheme works with the private sector where they pay for the house for years and then let it out to renters who then pay monthly.
