Ghana sealed a 1-0 win against host nation Canada to record an exciting start in their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign.
Black Princesses’ Sherifatu Sumaila scored the all-important goal after 22 minutes in Toronto’s National Soccer Stadium to hand Bashir Hayford’s side all the spoils in the Group A contest on Tuesday.
The win puts Ghana in second place, adrift Korea DPR on goals difference after the Asian side claimed a 2-1 victory over Finland in the other match.
After a quick start which produced rare goal moments, Sumaila tapped a low cross by Edem Atovor in from close range.
The hosts best chance came before halftime but a shot by Emma Fletcher was kept out as the ball struck the post.
Ghana will meet the 2006 tournament winners, Korea in the next game on Friday.
