Ghana face FIFA ban over government probe
FIFA has given the first hint that it could ban Ghana from all football-related government activities after a three-member commission was set up by the government to investigate the Black Stars’ poor performance at Brazil 2014 and other off-pitch events that embarrassed the country at the tournament.
In a letter sent to Ghana Football Association (GFA), FIFA sought clarification as to the nature of the investigation and the composition of the commission.
“We have learnt from media reports that the Presidency of the Republic of Ghana has appointed a Committee of Enquiry and Investigation into the Black Stars’ participation to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil,” deputy general secretary of FIFA, Markus Kattner, wrote in a letter.
“The composition and the competences of the said Commission are unclear. Provided the reports are true we deem it important to clarify from the beginning the procedures and to ensure that the GFA can operate without interference as required by FIFA statutes. Under this circumstance we kindly ask you to provide us with a report at your earliest convenience.”
The Commission, which was initially set up as a Committee by President John Mahama, is headed by an Appeal’s Court judge, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, with sports administrator, Moses Foh Amoaning, and Kofi Anokye Darko as members.
Ghana performed abysmally at the World Cup, crashing out of the competition in the first round with only a point from a possible nine.
