Boateng and Muntari could return for Ghana
Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari were sent home in disgrace for separate acts of indiscipline, but the Black Stars coach has left the door open for them to return to the national squad
Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah insists the disgraced duo could still have an international future despite being sent home before Thursday’s final Group G clash with Portugal.
Boateng was dismissed from the camp for using what were described as “vulgar verbal insults” towards Appiah, while Muntari was apparently sanctioned for an “unprovoked physical attack on an executive committee member”.
Neither featured as the Black Stars crashed out of the tournament with a single point after a 2-1 defeat to Portugal, but Appiah is adamant that their suspension from the squad need not be permanent.
“The letter issued to them was suspension, so it depends,” he told reporters at a post-match press conference. “If they perform well they could be invited back to the national team.”
On Wednesday, the Ghanaian government sent €2.25 million on a chartered plane to Brazil to pay the players after they threatened to boycott the Portugal match if they did not receive their appearance money.
Appiah admitted the situation was far from ideal preparation, but insisted he remains determined to continue his work with a young Black Stars squad.
“No coach loves to be in such a situation,” he added. “Every coach would love to have his players concentrating on games, not on money or anything else
“As for my future, I have a contract and it’s not ended yet, so I’ll keep building the team.
“Most of the players in this team are really young and I’m looking at building a team for the future. I believe their confidence will rise with time.
“The performance level has been really good, but sometimes you can play well and if you don’t take your chances, one opportunity leaves you out of the competition
“It’s unfortunate we could not get to the second round but performance-wise, Ghana did not do badly.”
