Kumasi Polytechnic students protest over gov't policies, POTAG strike

Kumasi Polytechnic students have hit the streets to express their displeasure over recent government policies and the ongoing strike by their lecturers.
This is one of many protests that have taken place in the Ashanti Regional capital in the first quarter of the year, mostly affecting the education sector.
Speaking to Kessben Television, the Public Relations Officer of the students body, Mr Opoku Agyemang, says they feel left out by some government policies. He says the two years work experience before employment and the utility bills they have been asked to pay by government, coupled with the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) strike action prompted them to take to the streets.
He added that the recent comments made by the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Okudjeto Ablakwa, that the Polytechnic is a stepping stone to university makes them feel been discriminated.
“We have rights like other university students, why are we asked to get two years working experience before employment?”
Touching on the admittance policy, Mr Agyemang says polytechnic students have increased in number, yet there no jobs in the country.
“Does that mean the government wants to close down the polytechnics,” he asked.
He threatened court action against government if their pleas are not heeded.
Polytechnics in Ho, Tamale and Cape Coast were also invited to take part in demonstrations in their respective areas.
