Parliament is broke – Isaac Asiamah

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Isaac Asiamah has revealed that Ghana’s Parliament, is broke.

He made the revelation on the floor of Parliament on Friday where he claimed that the lack of funds in the Legislature had crippled its operations.

He further accused the executive arm of government of deliberately starving the House of cash to prevent it from diligently carrying out its oversight responsibility.

Mr. Asiamah’s comments drew reactions from the Majority side of the House with the MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, applying to the Speaker to cause the Atwima Mponua MP to withdraw the claim that the House was broke.

Under pressure, from the Speaker, Mr. Asiamah withdrew his use of the word ‘broke’.

The Speaker, Doe Adjaho had earlier told MPs that although the House had some challenges, it had received some funding from the Ministry of Finance to cover January till May with the month of June to be paid in arrears.

However, in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Asiamah insisted that his claims were not an allegation.

“I was stating the fact… the committees are not working, are not functioning and we are supposed to provide proper oversight over the Executive.”

According to him, without adequate funds, committee members will not have that “opportunity to go out there to monitor government projects and we are all sitting in Parliament here…and that is not the best…committees are there idle; they don’t have money to go round and do proper inspections.”

He added that despite funding by the Finance Ministry, “it is not reflecting on committee work…I am speaking on authority.”
