NMC: We are ready to investigate the assault case

The National Media Commission (NMC) has indicated its preparedness to investigate and settle the assault of a Journalist by some Military personnel on Independence Day.

The Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mahama Ayariga advised the leadership of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) to seek redress at the NMC over the Military’s report which exonerated the officers involved.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, the Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong commended Mr. Ayariga for his suggestion saying, “we think the Minister’s suggestion is a very progressive suggestion and we will be very glad if the matter was handled in accordance with the suggestion by the Minister.”

Mr. Sarpong explained that the NMC has been empowered by the Constitution to investigate complaints against or by the media therefore if the matter is brought before it, “that will certainly be squarely within the mandate of the National Media Commission if the parties decided to submit themselves to NMC for resolution.”

He gave the assurance that the right principles will be applied to resolve the matter because news making rounds indicate that there are conflicting principles at stake; however, since the constitution seeks to protect the right of every Ghanaian, the right procedure will be adopted to solve the matter.
