Educate party supporters on court proceedings- Bombande

Executive Director of the West African Network for Peace (WANEP), Mr Emmanuel Bombande has appealed to the nation’s political parties involved in the election petition case to educate their supporters on the details and modus operandi of court proceedings.

“We have always maintained that when you are subjected to a court procedure, it is for the parties to take the lead in educating their supporters about the process in itself; the importance of respecting due process, which is very integral to the respect of the rule of law. The more we do that, the more this will be a very peaceful process,” he stated.

According to Mr. Bombande, since the parties exhibited mutual respect for each other in the courtroom, such decorum should be transferred to their supporters outside the courts.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Bombande commended the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia for tasking security forces to deal with anyone who was found to be disrupting the peace at the Court premises.

He urged the General Secretary of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie [Sir John] to do same.

“In the continuous engagement, with this type of leadership that the parties themselves will exhibit, we subject ourselves to respect what the judges agree because that is supposed to serve due process.

The debate that there should be live coverage or not was a matter for the judiciary to decide and we saw the initiation of Her Ladyship the Chief Justice and the establishment of that law go smoothly before we went into the case. So it is not about who likes it or not but the compulsion to respect the rule of law that must discipline us,” he added.
