Bawumia Escapes Death
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 elections, yesterday escaped death in what could have been a fatal accident after attending the enskinment of the new Bole Wura at Bole in the Northern Region.
According to Anthony Karbo, the former National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia and his entourage were some 20 minutes into the return journey to Accra after attending the enskinment of the Bole-Wura when the Landcruiser V8 vehicle in which he was travelling suffered two burst tyres.
This caused the vehicle to summersault but miraculously, as he put it “Dr. Bawumia and other occupants of the vehicle emerged from the wreck of the vehicle unaided.”
His driver, Emmanuel, bodyguard Tanko and press assistant, Kwabena Buadu, who were also in the vehicle, did not suffer any injury.
Following the accident, Dr Bawumia joined one of the vehicles in the convoy to continue the southward journey and upon reaching Kumasi, he was flown to Accra for treatment.
“Dr Bawumia left Bole, in the Northern Region, at 1:45 this afternoon for the Ashanti Region, when two of the tyres of the vehicle he was travelling in exploded 15 minutes into the journey. The vehicle flipped over, veered off the road, rolling over a few times. No other vehicle was involved in the accident. He was driven to Kumasi, from where he was flown to Accra for medical treatment”, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko wrote on his facebook wall.
Upon arriving in Accra, he went to the Leister Hospital at East Airport off the Spintex Road where he was being examined at the time of filing this report, DAILY GUIDE learnt.
According to Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, one of the specialists who first attended to Dr Bawumia in Accra, “he is doing very well. His condition is good. And he’s being observed in hospital and it is hoped that he will be discharged within 24 hours. The others are also responding to treatment and none of them has any life-threatening injuries. He has just been taken for x-ray”.
Nana Akufo-Addo was among early callers at the hospital. What is most odd is that on their way to Bole from Tamale, earlier reports said Jake Obetsebi Lamptey’s vehicle also suffered a burst tyre.
A flurry of phone calls among agitated party supporters and sympathizers occurred when news about the incident was broken.
The agitated supporters were calmed after learning that Dr Bawumia had escaped unhurt and that the wild rumours about his death were unfounded.
Dr Bawumia, leader of the team which unearthed and put together the numeral and other anomalies in the 2012 polls, branched to Bole upon completing a working tour of the Northern Region where he undertook the education of party faithful regarding the pending Supreme Court case of which he is one of the three petitioners.
He started the public education from the Ashanti Region to Brong Ahafo and then to the Northern Region from where he attended the Bolewura function.
The new Bolewura, James Adam Mahama, was an MP in Busia’s Progress Party (PP) in 1969.
Bole is the hometown of President John Mahama.
Dr Bawumia, as one of the three petitioners in the suit, is a critical player in the about-to-start case.
