100 Girls From Bono, Bono East & Ahafo Regions Benefit From ‘Girls In ICT’ Programme
About 100 female students drawn from Basic schools in the Bono, Bono-East and Ahafo regions are in Accra to interact and engage with stakeholders and mentors in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry.
This was after the beneficiary students had emerged victorious among the 1000 girls selected in each region to acquire training and skills in ICT, as part of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation’s Girls in ICT flagship programme launched in 2012.
At least, 200 students were also trained to facilitate the teaching and learning of ICT in the selected schools in the regions.
At the event, the Deputy Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Madam Ama Pomaa Boateng, speaking on behalf of the sector Minister, lauded the partners and industry players for their contribution to the career path of the young girls.
“We are not just supporting them to become IT professionals, but we are supporting them to make use of digital skills; that is why we say digital skills for life,” she said.
She indicated that the girls and young women were taken through programmes like coding, app development, and computer science which have the potential to enable them access a successful career in the ICT sector.
The training
She said the training was important since ICT skills are rapidly becoming a strong advantage for students in just about any other field they might choose to pursue.
She was excited about the selection of 100 girls who performed well in their assessment from the Bono East, Bono and Ahafo regions to share in this rare opportunity to ICT facilities and interact with women working in the ICT fields.
Madam Boateng urged the beneficiaries to pay attention to the mentee and learn a lot from the men in the field.
“Such attention is important in helping them advance and even outperform boys in reading and writing skills. Beyond that, it helps them to compete fairly and be amongst top performers in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes in the country,” she said.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to building a digital economy and bridging the gender gap in ICT. The Deputy Minister further encouraged young girls to embrace programmes in ICT and also take advantage of the opportunities it offered people globally
