More Bleeding for Boys: Gov’t tax winning bets in 2023 budget

The 2023 Budget presented by Finance Minister Ken Ofori Attah in parliament last Thursday targeted winnings on stake bets.

The Government has proposed in the 2023 budget for betting winnings to be taxed.

While many had their attention on the Ghana vs Portugal game, the Government was busily introducing many measures to widen the tax net of the country to raise revenue for the ailing economy.

One of the many taxes which was outlined by the budget subjected to the approval of parliament is tax-winning bets.

Betting companies are already being taxed and moving forward the Government wants to also tax individuals on their winnings. Many have described the move as greediness on the part of the Government.

Tax expert, Mr Asare speaking on Kessben TV’s Maakye with Kwame Appiah Kubi reckons the move is in the right direction.
