Executives of the opposition New Patriotic Pary (NPP) in the Bono Ahafo Region are expected to hand down sanctions to the party’s Director of Communications in Tain, Charles Akowuah Tuffuor, over what they described as betrayal of trust.
Mr. Charles Akowuah Tuffuor questioned the possibility of the Supreme Court ruling in favour of the petition filed by the NPP in dispute of the 2012 presidential election results.
The leadership of the party say they have evidence to prove that the elections were rigged in favor of John Mahama, who was declared winner by the Electoral Commission and was successfully sworn into office on January 7, 2013, as fourth President of the Fourth Republic.
NPP presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, along with running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and party chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, filed the suit at the Supreme Court to challenge the declaration of President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner.
The suit was filed against President John Mahama, Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Afari Gyan, and the Electoral Commission itself.
However, Charles Akowuah Tuffuor, who spoke on Adom FM Wednesday, said the party is better off strengthening its support base to ensure electoral victory in 2016.
According to him, the decision to go to court is only in the interest of “some two or three persons in the party,” not the majority of party members.
Regional executives of the party have expressed shock at Mr. Akowuah Tuffuor’s comments, which they say go against the interests of the party.
Speaking to Joy News, Regional Secretary Alfred Ofori Annye said the regional executives will meet to decide the fate of the Tain Director of Communications later today, Thursday.
After the meeting, he reported, party executives will prescribe the appropriate sanction against Mr. Akowuah Tuffuor.
“His action amounts to betrayal since the party met over the issue before finally deciding on the option of going to the Supreme Court to challenge the results,” Mr. Annye noted.
