The 2012 Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the Electoral Commission wrongly counted 1,340,000 of the votes cast in the 2012 Presidential elections.
In his opinion, the irregularities encountered by the party’s team of experts were “sophisticated irregularities” because the evidence gathered showed that “1,340,000 votes were identified as wrongly counted.”
Dr. Bawumia insisted that after critically reviewing the evidence which had been gathered, the NPP’s Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo should have been declared the President of the Republic of Ghana.
At a press briefing in Accra, Dr. Bawumia also alleged that the Electoral Commission, with the connivance of the ruling National Democratic Congress, had also bloated the biometric voters register in an effort to rig the 2012 Presidential elections.
According to him, the number of registered voters was increased from 13 million to over 14 million during the cleaning up of the register for the elections.
“The fundamentals have to do with the voters register. When we finished the biometric registration exercise, we were told that we had around 13 million registered voters and that some cleaning up was to be done of this register. By the time we saw the cleaned up register in November, the electoral biometric register had increased from around 13 million that was announced at the end of the registration exercise, to 14 million.”
“A total number of 127,000 were added to the register between November and December 2012 and somehow, you are only having this added apparently to the presidential side of the results. Basically, you cannot have two registers for the same election and this is the point that we are making,” he added.
The party has since filed a suit at the Supreme Court contesting the results of the 2012 Presidential elections.
