Over 1.5 million jobs created in Ghana by the Telecoms sector – Chamber

The telecommunications sector in Ghana is said to have created over 1.5 milion jobs in the country.
A Ghana News Agency report citing a press statement from the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications said the sector which had created over 1.5 million jobs, had had a positive influence on general inflation as well.
Inflation in the telecommunications industry is 0.6 per cent, the lowest among all the key sectors in Ghana, the report indicated.
The telecoms sector in Ghana has been described as ‘vibrant and competitive’.
There are currently six companies in the country offering various services including mobile telephony, data and others. There is also a growing apps sector.
A 2010 Ghana Statistical Service report had said the telecoms industry has been a key driver of economic growth. It said the sector directly accounted for 7% of investments in Ghana, 10% of government income, and 2% of GDP.
For instance, Ghana’s cellular SIM subscriber numbers are inching closely to the country’s 24.6 million population.
The latest data released by the National Communications Authority (NCA) shows that the total mobile subscriber base as at June 2012 stands at over 23 million.
